Anuli Croon (1964 Leeuwarden)
studied from 1984-1989 at the Royal Academy of Art and Design, Den Bosch in the Netherlands.
In 1990 she moved to Rotterdam where she lives and works.
For Anuli Croon, Rotterdam is an attractive place to live and work in, among cube houses, the 'Pencil', the Market Hall and the harbour, 174 nationalities, Zadkine and a constant hullabaloo. At the same time, ho- wever, it is vital to filter stimuli and information, and to Anuli Croon this is a fairly straightforward thing: in her studio she orders the world scrupulously, with rollers, small brushes and stencils - that is: her world
of schematically presented perfectly calm landscapes, tronies, figures and the city. All components, even including the nose, are reduced to forms in the two-dimensional plane.
'In my work there is no perspective', she says, 'but by using diagonal lines I create a sort of fading out; I zoom in, and zoom out again as much as I can. And I try to arrange it all in a natural way, to interweave it all.'
She weaves patterns that remind you of Brabant Red Check or tartan, grids with dots and block diagrams in all possible colours. Forms are tumbling over one another. A block of flats is soaring high over everything while the mountain is toppling, a plant, a hand ... it makes your head spin.
